This week the class topics included:

  • Internet safety risks in the learning environment
  • Digital citizenship and digital responsibility
  • Media literacy from the aspect of reliability of information online, ability to manage student’s reputations, and the student’s ability to recognize scams.
  • Adhering to FERPA safeguards

 

What I learned this week…

  • The use of the internet in the learning environment can be a tricky thing to manage from the instructor’s perspective because of the various risks to the students.
  • Educating students at a young age is important to way to help student avoid potential pitfalls germane to using the internet i.e… understanding copyright laws, privacy concerns, avoiding scams and managing their reputations.
  • Instructor’s ability to model proper digital etiquette can provide a positive (or negative) center of gravity that can drive student behavior.
  • Instructors must also be educated and educate students of the dangers of fake news and bogus information.

 

How I will use this knowledge/application in the future

In the future I will use these concepts by creating a classroom policy that incorporates FERPA policies and other standards that help drive the internet activities I use in the classroom.

Also, I plan to create lessons that help ‘train’ students about the items that can impact them through the internet.

 

What is the relative advantage of using this technology?

The advantage of using this technology in the classroom is multi-tier:

  • Having the information that allows teachers and students the capability to employ a powerful tool for leaning; while being cognoscente of how our behavior in those environments impacts ourselves and others.
  • Ultimately, the major advantage of having this information is being able to mitigate risk associated with using the internet in the classroom environment to both teachers and students.

 

I wonder what would happen if…

I wonder what would happen if students were used as end-users to help drive the development of administrative, physical and technical controls that we use in the classroom how different would those controls be from what prescribed without their feedback?
